Expected Risks and Returns
The Expected Risk and Return document illustrates the relationship between risk and return.

A number of indicative portfolios are shown - ranging from secure to aggressive - and the expected returns and risks that we estimate will prevail over the forthcoming 5 to 10 years.

The returns are derived from expected returns from each of the individual asset classes which are in turn broken down to the amount of 'income' return expected and the amount of 'growth' return.

The document also gives an indication of the risk involved in each indicative portfolio - in terms of frequency of loss, largest yearly loss and estimated total time to recovery. This is based on data collected by us for the period March 1988 to now and is for illustrative purposes only.

The document shown on the website is historical for demonstration purposes. Clients of the practice have access to the current version.

Asset Class Performance
The Benefits of Diversification document displays the total annual returns - capital and income (with the exception of residential property) - for each asset class as at the 30th of June each year with most series beginning on 1 July 1983.

Numbers recorded in green represent the best asset class in any financial year and numbers in red represent the worst asset class in any financial year.

The table highlights a number of interesting features of investment and asset class performance, such as:

  • Those asset classes which have achieved the highest annual returns in some years, have also achieved the greatest annual losses in other years
  • The annual asset class returns and the ranking of those returns relative to other asset classes has an extremely low level of predictability
  • Diversification across asset classes is a very effective way to reduce the volatility of portfolio returns and increase the likelihood of achieving expected investment outcomes over a required time frame
